Cabaret Goth

Cabaret Goth, or Burlesque Goth, is like Steampunk; another Goth type smashed with Victorian (or at least, older age) fashions. Burlesque shows were the basic striptease shows of the old days where showing any more than an ankle was considered promiscuous. Cabaret or Burlesque shows had a typical standard- mixing sexy dress with classy and elegant dress instead of going all-out BDSM. The metal star Marilyn Manson's first wife, Dita von Teese, commonly dressed in the burlesque fashion. Cabaret also meant a form of comedy theatre entertainment, so the fashion also came from a kind of performing art. There's no specific music genre, although bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees have played with the theme before.

Cabaret fashions aren't only for women; men too can enjoy the style, since they, as Black Waterfall's "Goth [Stereo]Types" says, "often resemble a peculiar cross between Dracula, Charlie Chaplin and a mime; but they have a class that is all their own". If that doesn't help, then men generally wear small bowl hats and suits with a bowtie, that can have pattersn like pinstripes.

A Cabaret Goth's dress includes corsets, garters, fishnet, feathers, and dresses in the mermaid style or ones that end at midthigh with a trailing back piece. A 1950's hairdo, as I like to think of it, is also common (one such as Madam von Teese's hair in this picture to the right). Black heels and black jeweled chokers are also a nice touch. Makeup can be heavier than Romantic Goths, having a nice smokey, bold color with a sharply defined cat's eye eyeliner and a bold red lip.

Think Cabaret Goth could be your thing?

  • You love the sexier clothes like corsets, garters and fishnets, but still want to retain a classy feel
  • You love older 50's styles or burlesque themes
  • You love the dark, morbid aesthetics blended in with your other tastes
  • You adore fishnet and feathers
  • You love heavier makeup styles
  • You love older bands

These are just some of the things that could make Cabaret Goth your thing. It's up to you to find out what you like and dislike, Remember, there are no rules as to what mold you have to fit in the Goth subculture. You could combine aspects from all different types and make it completely your own, or gravitate to one particular style that you really like. It's all up to you!
